Crack the Code Benefit - A Huge Success!
When Janet Clapp of Fair Haven was diagnosed with breast cancer, Holmdel Community United Church of Christ (HCUCC) rallied around her and her family providing meals and emotional support during a most difficult time. Ms. Clapp was so moved by the compassion of her church family that she decided to pay it forward once she got healthy and chose to work to raise money for cancer research. An avid runner herself, it was fitting that Clapp establish a 5K race in the Holmdel area knowing full well the generosity of the running community and her church. Members did not hesitate to volunteer.
Establishing the race two years ago, Janet has managed to raise tens of thousands of dollars to help fund two beneficiaries that have helped her as well as so many others. The proceeds from this event will be split equally between Dr. Susan Domchek of Penn's Abramson Cancer Center for her continued cancer research and the HCUCC.
As Race Director, Janet Clapp has built a bridge connecting people that want to help with those that need the help. Specifically, the proceeds for cancer research will go to Dr. Susan M. Domchek who heads up the breast cancer genetics program for the Abramson Cancer Center at University of Pennsylvania. She has had proven success in treating women with BRCA 1 or 2 gene mutations with a pill known as a PARP inhibitor. The patient was cured with little or no side effects. Additionally, she is working with a vaccine that enables a woman with advanced stage cancer to cause her immune system to attack the cancer that already exists. The vaccine is said to prevent the cancer from coming back.
The second beneficiary is Janet's church in Holmdel. The HCUCC is a 'community' church, serving people of many different religious backgrounds. As a mission-based church, HCUCC serves many in the wider community by staffing and supporting food pantries and soup kitchens, homeless services (Bridges program), overseas development projects, children's and youth ministries and more. This church has deep roots in the community making its facility available to both its members and charitable organizations within the area as a meeting space. Proceeds will help upgrade and restore the historic church buildings which date back to 1705.
'The HCUCC was there for me during my own cancer treatment,' explained Janet Clapp. 'This church is a beacon in our community, providing love and support to so many.' Their missions range from the Bridges program, Keansburg Soup Kitchen, the Calico Cat, Habitat for Humanity and more. I think the church's motto says it all: 'Whoever you are, wherever you are on life's journey, you are welcome here.'
Hundreds of runners/walkers/volunteers turned out on Saturday morning in Holmdel to 'help find the cause and ease the cure!' for breast cancer by participating in the 2nd annual Crack the Code 5K run.
The wind was brisk at times, but the temperatures were cooperating making a great day for a run. The Breeze 107.1 FM was broadcasting live music creating a festive atmosphere prior to the race.
